OUTDOOR 2014 T+F QUOTES

"Remember you can make a choice in life: be average, be good, or be great" -York XC Coach Joe Newton

“Hey! I meant to tell you that I ran my first half-marathon on Sunday! Who would've thought a sprinter would be able to finish 13.1 miles?"

Former SMTF runner Jeannie Knowles talking about her debut 1:42.01 half marathon at the Delaware Marathon on Sunday.

(Her PR's were 13.01 for 100M, 27.40 for 200M and 58.77 for 400M)

"The duration of an athletic contest is relatively short, while the training for it may take many weeks of arduous work and continuous exercise of self-effort. The real value of sport is not the actual game played in the limelight of applause but the hours of dogged determination and self-discipline carried out alone, imposed and supervised by an exacting conscience. The applause soon dies away, the prize is left behind, but the character you build is yours forever."

"Running fast requires conditioning your body, absorbing proper mechanics to the point where they're second nature, and then forgetting the details and letting it rip. It may sound funny to someone who hasn't been there, but the more you can let go, the faster you can go. Look at films of Mohammad Ali in his prime and you'll see how he had that little wrist flick on the end of his jab; if he had to think about doing that, he couldn't have done it. People have things inside them they don't know about until it comes out. When somebody asks me how fast a human being can run, I tell them that however fast they think it is, it'll be faster." - John Smith, UCLA track coach

"[Kayla] Montgomery, who attends Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, N.C., was diagnosed [multiple sclerosis] three years ago. At the time, she was one of the slowest runners on her team. But instead of throwing in the towel, she channeled her energy into making the most of her high school track career."

Sat, March 1- "Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didnt let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasnt one more thing you could've done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentleman - you're perfect!" m Coach Gary Gaines off of Friday Night Lights

INDOOR 2014 T+F QUOTES

Feb 26- Jordan Hasay's statement and withdrawl at USA Indoor Nationals

“As with all of the competitors who lined up on Saturday, I desperately wanted to make the team to represent the United States at the upcoming World Indoor Track and Field Championships. Since Saturday evening my emotions have ranged from despair to determination to go to Poland and represent my country as best I can. After much thought and consideration, however, I have decided to withdraw my protest as I do not want to make a national team under these circumstances. I wish all members of the USA team going to Poland my best and look forward to continuing to train hard and competing to represent the USA in future World Championship and Olympic Games.”

"Focus: The ability to focus in the face of distractions or unexpected circumstances. The mentally tough runner doesn’t avoid situations, but instead addresses them right away. For example, when you’re in the last miles of the marathon, you feel dead tired, you’re hurting, and you want to quit. That is the time to focus. You say, “I must keep moving forward, just this step, one more step.” And you’ll likely get to the finish line when you are mentally tough."

Feb 5- "Lindsay Prettyman had a great day. She showed her confidence to dominate the 3,000 meters with a nine-second school record and an ECAC qualifying time. She has matured so much in her events. It is a pleasure to watch her race."Coach McFarlan, speaking about former St. Mark's track and field standout Lindsay Prettyman after her school record performance in the 3000M run.

Feb 4- "In fact, she was slightly peeved not to have dipped under nine minutes. As it was she ran an all-time high school best (indoors or out) for 3,000 meters." Mike Hickey, Alexa Efraimson's coach, speaking after she ran 9:00.16 for 3000M last weekend. That converts to a 9:42 for 2 miles.

February 3- "Some people train knowing they're not working as hard as other people. I can't fathom how they think."-Alberto Salazar“

January, 2014- "Trust me, my runners aren't going to run one event while looking past it to the second event. When they get on the line, that's a do-or-die situation for them."- Alberto Salazar

"People make a big mistake when they say, 'I need to be motivated.' You motivate yourself. I might inspire somebody, but that person has to be motivated within themselves first. Look inside yourself, believe in yourself, put in the hard work, and your dreams will unfold." -Billy Mills, 10,000-meter Olympic gold medalist at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics-

2013 Quotes

There are no shortcuts in life and running. Do the work to reap the benefits. Bottom line: you get out what you put in. Make no excuses. Do the WORK." -Kara Deschenes

"The best way to become a mentally tough runner is to believe that you're a mentally tough runner." -Ryan Hall, American half marathon record holder

"The ability to continue when training gets difficult is the greatest opportunity to grow as an athlete and a human being. If you can find the right encouragement within you during a tough moment, you're giving yourself a vital tool to accomplish many great things. Sometimes the same verse can get stale, so I think it's important to keep mantras fresh and effective. That being said, the most significant words my coach Terrence Mahon ever told me was as I was heading to the starting line of the Chicago Marathon in 2005. My goal was to win the race, and my training had gone very well. He is a guy of many words and on this day he simply said 'Define yourself.' It was such a powerful statement and I rehearsed it a million times on the streets of Chicago that morning—and got my first marathon win." -Deena Kastor, American Record Holding Marathon Runner

"I pushed all negative thoughts out of my mind. I imagined it was a nice cool fall day," said St. Mark's Kaminski in the News Journal

My last thought about Kenya and what makes the runners here so special is their incredible self-belief. I have never met a group of runners so confident in their abilities, even if they are unproven. For example, you cannot tell the difference between a 2:04 marathon runner and a 2:20 marathon runner in Kenya; they exude the same confidence and self-belief. It seems that everyone here believes they are just one day, or one race, away from hitting it big, and with confidence like that, perhaps they are. They certainly aren't afraid to take a risk and put it all out on the line, whether in a race or in training. Nothing great ever happens without taking a risk. -Olympian Ryan Hall

"You're not puking and nothing's broken so get going." - Vivian McQueeney

"I knew, as I was running, That if I wanted to train with faster girls I had to do their workouts. -No Shorcuts! -Hannah Falchuk

"I may not be the lithest, the most talented, or have the fastest time in the field, but I have passion and courage, and sometimes that is enough to do something extraordinary." -Lauren Fleshman

"Putting miles in your training log is like putting money in the bank. You begin to draw interest on it immediately." Hal Higdon

“We may train or peak for a certain race, but running is a lifetime sport.” Alberto Salazar

"When it's your last chance of the season to run the mile, and you have three other girls next to you with the same goal in mind, make a bet with your coach." Marisa Chamness from "How to Run a Six-Minute Mile" (an essay she submitted to Markings)

"If you don't have confidence, you'll always find a way not to win" -Carl Lewis

“I know Oregon’s a great team. But I can’t stand there wasting time thinking, ‘This girl does this. She’s potentially better than me.’ It’s all about guts, and it’s all about heart. So whoever they’re going to put on that leg doesn’t matter. "

-Villanova senior Emily Lipari after the epic win and collegiate record against Oregon in the Penn Relays 4x800M. Lipari split a 2:02.5!

March 1- “And too there were questions: What did he eat? Did he believe in isometrics? Isotonics? Ice and heat? How about aerobics, est, ESP, STP? What did he have to say about yoga, yogurt, Yogi Berra? What was his pulse rate, his blood pressure, his time for 100-yard dash? What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. Monday, March 8- Natalie Pesetsky let go of all her nerves and became the breakout artist of the year with her performance, “Let Go” on Friday Evening at the SpartanCenter. Accompanied by matt Mossman, Pesestky’s song-writing rendition with acoustic tones left the audience speechless and searching the internet for her underground work.

Merissa Cope, an avid Pesetsky groupie, characterized her performance as dazzling and uplifting. While backstage during the show she stated, “ummm, wow, this was the best performance of the night.” There were many acts to choose from, so for Cope to gave that stamp of approval was genuine and authentic. Unfortunately, the crowd’s enthusiasm for the show was short lived with the arrival and departure of the next performance. This fan was not certain how or why DiGennaro was allowed on stage. His rigid guitar skills and off-key vocals made the audience cringe for a bathroom or snack break. At one moment it became apparent that he actually did not know what he was singing, and he had to stop and start. Let’s hope that his musical debut was also his final act.

Overall, this reporter would rate Pesestsky as the highlight of the evening, and Digennaro as the lowlight (or low life).
